Many of Alan’s clients have been in the Health sector. Coaching managers and assisting with restructuring in large DHBs as well as small not for profit societies; assisting to develop more customer-oriented procedures and quality systems in health clinics; advising on strategy and business plans; working with Maori Health organisations - have all been part of Alan’s service.
Alan has provided advice to a broad range of clients across the Not for Profit spectrum. He has provided assistance to, and carried out reviews of organisations in the health, education, community development and social enterprise spaces. He has worked with major Family and Community Trust funders to both assess their internal needs and to assist with capacity building in their client organisations.
Alan was brought up in Kaiti Gisborne in a predominantly Māori environment. In his early career he worked with the Ministry of Works carrying out social impact assessments with Ngati Porou communities on the East Cast relating to forestry projects. He also wrote a government bulletin on planning to meet Māori needs after extensive consultation with Kaumatua around the country.
Alan has provided advice to a broad range of clients across the education spectrum. He has carried out reviews of the Ministry if Education’s Early Childhood Development Unit, advised on the creation of the SPACE National Trust for pre-school education, advised the Kelston Deaf Education over several years, helped form the Vision Education Agency, reviewed over 24 failing schools and assisted to turn them around.

Carried out organizational and structure reviews for several councils.
Carried out improvement reviews in key areas – corporate services, customer service centres, communications, operations, regulatory operations, asset management, recreation facilities, and land transport.
Alan has considerable work and experience in the transport sector. He was the first Chief Executive of the Land Transport Safety Authority and Chair of the New Zealand Road Safety Trust. As a Divisional Manager of the Waikato Regional Council he was responsible for its land transport including for the region’s land transport plan and programme, coordinating the allocation of roading construction and maintenance resources in conjunction with District Councils.
